The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) supports sports leagues and the NCAA in its efforts to restrict sports betting in New Jersey.
On Tuesday, the DoJ stated that a repeal on the state law prohibition for casino and racetrack sports betting is illegal and does not comply with the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
"...as long as the only entities that may engage in sports wagering must be licensed by New Jersey, New Jersey is in effect licensing sports wagering, which is squarely within PASPA's licensing prohibition," according to the DoJ brief.
