England will be looking to consolidate their place at the top of World Cup Qualification Group D with a victory over Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday. The two teams have been in the same group in the previous qualification campaign as well and England beat Lithuania 4-0 at home and 3-0 away before securing their spot at Euro 2016. Those were the only previous meetings between the two sides as Lithuania have never qualified for an European Championship or a World Cup as an independent nation.
England have a pretty good record in the World Cup qualification campaign, three wins and a draw, six goals scored and none conceded. However, the 0-0 draw in Slovenia was quite disappointing as England were quite lucky to get a point out of that match. Last time out they hammered Scotland 3-0 at Wembley, a result that persuaded the FA to give Gareth Southgate a permanent contract as manager. Earlier this week the Three Lions lost the friendly match against Germany 1-0. Gary Cahill is suspended, while Chris Smalling picked up an injury and was replaced by Middlesbrough's Ben Gibson.
Lithuania had a decent campaign so far, at least by their standards, as they lost just one of their four matches. The defeat was a heavy one, 4-0 in Slovakia, but Lithuania did manage to hold both Slovenia and Scotland to draws before beating Malta 2-0. Another interesting fact is that Lithuania have lost just two of their last seven World Cup qualifying matches.
Probable line-ups:
England: Hart - Clyne, Stones, Keane, Bertrand - Lallana, Dier, Chamberlain - Alli, Defoe, Sterling
Lithuania: Setkus - Vaitkunas, Luksa, Mikuckis, Slavickas - Kuklys, Zulpa - Cernych, Zlivka, Novikovas - Valskis
My prediction: England to win 2-0.
