Last season's Premier League title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City rekindle their rivalry this weekend, the two sides will clash at Wembley Stadium on Sunday with the FA Community Shield up for grabs. Last season Manchester City won the Premier League title while Liverpool finished second due to a difference of just one point, but the Reds made up for that with a triumph in the UEFA Champions League. Manchester City defeated Liverpool 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium last season after the match at Anfield ended goalless. Liverpool have won the Community Shield 15 times so far, the last time in 2006, while Manchester City have won it five times, including last year.
Liverpool had a fairly quiet summer after the glorious season finale, they celebrated the UEFA Champions League and then signed just a youth player, 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg from Zwolle. They have lost three of their seven friendly matches this summer, most notably a 3-0 defeat against Napoli, but manager Jurgen Klopp is confident that his side will show their true face in the games that matter. Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita have both recovered from their injuries and will be available for selection, but Nathaniel Clyne will be sidelined for six months.
Manchester City have dominated the domestic scene last season, they have won the Community Shield, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup and lost just four matches in the process. This summer they added central midfielder Rodri to their squad, he joined from Atletico Madrid for a transfer record fee of 60 million pounds. On the other hand, long-serving players like Vincent Kompany and Fabian Delph were allowed to leave. Manager Pep Guardiola doesn't have any fresh injury concerns, only left-back Benjamin Mendy remains sidelined.
Probable line-ups:
Liverpool: Alisson - Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson - Wijnaldum, Keita, Henderson - Wilson, Salah, Origi
Man City: Ederson - Walker, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko - de Buryne, Rodri, David Silva - Bernardo Silva, Aguero, Sterling
My prediction:
Manchester City looked quite a bit more solid that Liverpool throughout this summer's friendly matches, so I expect the Citizens to win the match 2-1.
Here are the odds for this match at William Hill:
Liverpool win - 3.80
Draw - 3.75
Man City win - 1.90
