UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool have decided to make some room in their squad for next season, so they decided to release striker Daniel Sturridge and left-back Alberto Moreno as their contracts with the club expired. Sturridge, aged 29, has scored 67 goals in 160 appearances for the Reds after having joined them from Chelsea back in 2013. Moreno made 141 appearances for Liverpool, he joined from Sevilla in 2014. Both players were already at the club when manager Jurgen Klopp took charge.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is now highly regarded by the Liverpool owners, who are keen on offering him a new contract. "The most important words to say to these two remarkable players are 'thank you'," Jurgen Klopp said about Sturridge and Moreno. "Alberto is a person whose personality is reflected in how he plays - full of life, full of energy, always positive. An unbelievable character who is always willing to give all of himself for the team. Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think. He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important. We will miss them of course, but we can say farewell with the best words possible: Guys, you leave as European champions."
Both players had an important part to play during Klopp's first few seasons at Liverpool, but the 2018-2019 campaign saw them drop down the pecking order. Sturridge made 27 appearances in all competitions last season, but 20 of them were as a substitute. His departure might mean that young Belgium striker Divock Origi might remain at the club after having scored decisive goals in the UEFA Champions League. Alberto Moreno only managed to make four starts this season and one substitute appearance as Andrew Robertson established himself as the first-choice left-back. Liverpool have not made any incoming transfers yet this summer, but on the departures front they also let striker Danny Ings make his move to Southampton permanent for a fee of almost 20 million pounds.
Liverpool are 5/2 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title next season.
